A Fresh Perspective: Welcoming Our New Chief Operating Officer

Image

Derek Kalinauskas

Earlier this year, HKIS announced the appointment of a new Chief Operating Officer Mr. Derek Kalinauskas. Derek will carry the torch from Joy Okazaki who is retiring after an impactful 23 years of service. We had the chance to get to know Derek a little bit better during his short visit to campus in preparation for his family’s full move to Hong Kong during the summer. It was clear as we sat around the table chatting that he brings a unique cultural perspective and a wealth of professional experience that spans various sectors, including business development, private equity and education.

From Montreal to Hong Kong
Born and raised in the vibrant city of Montreal, Derek spent his early years in the rich culture of Quebec. His first language is French (but don’t test him!), and he completed much of his schooling in this bilingual environment, later transitioning to Upper Canada College in Toronto. He holds a commerce degree from McGill University, where he also received a graduate diploma in public accountancy.

He moved to the picturesque Niagara region four years ago to serve as the Chief Financial Officer at Ridley College—an esteemed international boarding school that has over 700 students from 60 countries. This experience equipped him with critical operational insights and deepened his appreciation for community and belonging, values that also resonate strongly with our mission here at HKS.

A Family Man
Outside of his professional life, Derek is a dedicated family man. He and his wife have two active children ages 10 and 8. This means you will probably run into Derek as he’s supporting his son on the soccer field or cheering on his daughter at horseback riding events.

The family is rounded out by their Maltipoo mix named Peaches. The complicated task of moving to a new country with a pet was his first operational test, but they couldn't imagine being here without Peaches.

Derek will miss some of some aspects of having lived in a wintery climate, like playing in the snow. However, getting to experience life in a warmer city was one of the driving forces behind the family’s move, especially for his wife who is originally from the Caribbean. They are excited (for now) that there will be plenty of hot months to enjoy the natural surroundings and beaches close by, something they didn’t expect when they pictured moving to a big international metropolis.

A Vision for HKIS
What attracted Derek to HKIS specifically? The opportunity to make a significant impact in a larger educational setting had major appeal.

"I'm excited about the potential for deeper connections and broader influence within the HKIS community. I think the scale of our school will allow me to foster relationships that enrich the educational experience for students, staff, and families."

His previous role at Ridley College prepared him for this transition, but he recognizes that HKIS offers unique challenges and opportunities that will further his growth as a leader. He’s clearly passionate about advancing education and leveraging his expertise to support the growth of our school.

Embracing New Adventures
When Derek spent some time in Hong Kong this spring getting orientated on his new role, he sensed a welcoming atmosphere in Hong Kong. He said that despite the size of HKIS, he can tell it retains the feel of a close-knit community. His first impressions highlight the kindness of our staff and the vibrant spirit of our student body.

When we asked how he embodies the qualities of a Dragon to wrap up the conversation, he thought for a moment before replying that he is both fearless and adventurous. As he embarks on this journey with us, these are two qualities that will help Derek lead the operational needs of HKIS into a new era.
