MESSAGE FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

Dear HKIS Community,

This year is special: The Class of 2023 is the 56th to graduate from our school! Congratulations to each and every one of you.

The class of 2023 had a unique high school experience. Their ninth-grade year began with the disruptions of the protests and then the beginning of the pandemic. As 14-year-olds they quickly learned how to be independent students taking rigorous classes through an on again off again virtual structure.

Over the past four years, they have become flexible in the face of adversity by joining teams at the drop of a hat and re-working their club philosophies and structures. Routines were hard to come by but they made the best of each situation.

Now four years after much turbulence they have become the leaders of our school and left a lasting impression for years to come. The Class of 2023 believes in building community and with every spirit opportunity they made sure that all grades were included, supported, and most-importantly had a great time. These Seniors had an epic finish during the lyric battles with choreography and left the gym losing their voices after singing their hearts out.

The Class of 2023 has been a special group of students who understand tradition and honor the past graduates while also creating new traditions for years to come. Their class motto, “It is what it is”, shows the humor of the class along with their willingness to adapt to any challenge that comes in their way.

We are proud to welcome the Class of 2023 into our alumni community. I hope the readers will enjoy this special graduation issue that offers a glimpse into the celebrations and rituals around graduation. To the Class of 2023, it has been my complete pleasure to be your principal.

Until our paths cross again,

Dr. David Lovelin
High School Principal
