on Dual Language Immersion
We are thrilled to share the progress of our Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Pathway, launched with one Reception 1 class at the start of the 2025-2026 school year. This pathway, rooted in a Reggio-inspired, play-based approach, fosters proficiency in both Mandarin and English while igniting curiosity and a joyful exploration of language and culture.
At the core of our approach to DLI is the belief that children thrive when engaged in meaningful experiences. Through intentional language exposure and interactive learning, students immerse themselves in the patterns, sounds, and cultural nuances of both languages. The classroom environment promotes playful inquiry, making language an integral part of every moment of discovery and collaboration.
Our DLI educators prioritize helping students settle into routines and build a sense of belonging within the classroom community. A distinctive feature of the program is the exclusive use of the target language by teachers, creating an enriching linguistic environment. Language learning is naturally woven into core subjects, allowing students to engage deeply while acquiring vocabulary and cultural insights.
Shi Laoshi and He Laoshi lead the class in a verse of the HKIS “4 Bes” song in Mandarin.
Cognitive Benefits
Bilingualism, fostered by immersion programs, is associated with improved cognitive flexibility, problem-solving skills, and creativity.
Language Proficiency
Students in dual language programs achieve high levels of proficiency in both the target language and English. One study found that 80% of students in dual immersion programs reached advanced levels of proficiency in the target language by 5th grade.
Social and Cultural Awareness
Dual language immersion programs promote cultural competence and empathy. A survey of parents and educators indicated that 90% believe these programs foster appreciation for diversity and global citizenship.

Storybooks and a set of teacups add a touch of Chinese culture to the Reception 1 classroom of the DLI Pathway as children play in the background.
Our young learners have demonstrated remarkable resilience and enthusiasm, quickly adapting to the program’s rhythm and confidently switching between languages. DLI teachers deliver the curriculum with creativity and intentionality, and students’ joyful participation showcases the effectiveness of our approach. The dedication and expertise of our educators nurture each child’s linguistic journey with warmth.
This shows how students spend two days living in dual languages.

“We are truly grateful for the positive impact the DLI Pathway has had on our son, and by extension, our entire family. Our home is now filled with Chinese songs and stories, and our son has developed a genuine appreciation for both cultures.”

Feedback from families has been overwhelmingly positive, with parents expressing delight in their children’s excitement for learning both languages and engaging with cultural content through hands-on experiences. The program also fosters meaningful cultural exchange, enhancing students' appreciation for diverse perspectives.
We recognize the need to balance language exposure for students with varying proficiency levels. To address this, we are implementing small group interactions and targeted support to ensure every child thrives. Looking ahead, we remain committed to refining the DLI Pathway into a high-quality, joyful, and culturally rich experience—one where children not only learn languages but live them.
