THE YEARS ZOOM BY
Catching Up with
Jim Handrich

We had the absolute pleasure of Catching Up with Jim Handrich for our first ever virtual alumni event on October 29, 2020. Nearly 100 former students, faculty and colleagues Zoomed in from around the globe to hear from Jim Handrich, the long-serving former principal, Associate Head of School and Head of School at HKIS from 1983 until his retirement in 2007.

Mr. Handrich (as he is still referred to by his former students!) shared some of his favorite memories, stories and what’s he’s most proud of from his many years at HKIS. Jim commented on a few things that stand out to him today such as the Service on Saturday Program that began in the early 1990s and the increase in Interim programs that have a service focus. Additionally, Jim shared he is proud of developing the Strings program and believes our PE departments are just amazing: "I really love that we do adventure learning," he said. And, finally starting the Chinese Language Program that began in the late 80s with the help of so many faculty and Nancy Kroonenberg.

A big thanks to alumnus Tim Chen ’92 for moderating the event and getting Mr. Handrich to share some of the funnier moments involving students and their hijinx over the years. The virtual event was just what we needed to connect to those both near and far during these most unusual times.

Thanks again Jim!
