Going Digital

It is my great pleasure to launch a sneak preview of our brand new DragonTales: Digital. After 20 years of publishing a beautiful bi-annual magazine, we made the much debated decision to go 100% digital.

Originally an alumni publication featuring HKIS Alumni Making Moves, class reunions, and Class Notes from alumni over the decades, DragonTales evolved to a community publication in recent years. This was particularly visible in our summer 2019 issue, where athletics team captains were featured on the front cover, and the demand for the magazine from current students and parents was at our highest. Today, you’ll see vibrant cover photos in the main offices of each campus, faculty lounges, the Dragon Shop, the Admissions Office, and in our student counseling spaces. We are so proud of the DragonTales legacy, and I credit the high quality publication in recent years to PR & Communications Manager, Veronica (Galbraith) Booth '97 as the Managing Editor and alumna Linne Tsu '96 who designed the layouts.

Our Sustainability Promise
In Spring of 2019, HKIS completed a six-year strategic plan, which included four goals, one of which promised we would promote a culture of environmental sustainability and have an actively engaged community in environmental stewardship. While DragonTales holds a special place in the hearts of many alumni around the world, we are conscious of the effects of printing thousands of copies of the magazine and the carbon footprint associated with shipping it all over the world to over 4,000 alumni. And so, we have made the brave decision to put our efforts into producing a different, but equaling engaging digital experience with DragonTales: Digital.

The Digital Platform
By now I hope you’ve downloaded the mobile application called MagLoft, which will be the engine to deliver our content. We are excited to continue sharing updates on alumni, key features from the HKIS campus, student artwork, and stories from our student body we call Dragon Pride. With our new digital platform, we will link to videos, episodes from our Dragonwaves podcast series, and online resources directly from our articles. We hope this will bring a greater immersive experience that will allow you to stay connected, be inspired, and be engaged in your own personal way—on your phone, listening while driving, or on your desktop.

A Sneak Peek
This sneak peek is a mini-edition of DragonTales: Digital featuring our Annual General Meeting held in January 2020, complete with further editorials complementing the content shared at this virtual meeting, supporting podcasts, and a behind-the-scenes on the production of the event. Stay tuned for our full summer edition to be released in May 2021.

Happy reading, browsing, viewing, and listening!

Sincerely,
Carrie Chen
