Back to the Future:
2026 HKIS Spring Celebration
How do you honor 60 years of our school’s rich history? You start at the very beginning. You travel back in time to where it all began—in 1960s Hong Kong—when the first chapters of HKIS’s story were written.
On April 25, 2026, more than 700 guests joined HKIS for a “Back to the Future”–themed Spring Celebration, marking the start of our 60th anniversary year with a journey uniquely our own. The evening transported guests to 1966 Hong Kong through immersive spaces honoring our school’s origins, founders, and decades of memories. The main program, hosted by alumni MCs, featured dramatic student performances, a mini-documentary on the Mache family, and live music by the HS String Quartet and Indigo Town. It was a joyful tribute to the enduring HKIS mission—and to the community that has shaped our legacy for 60 years.

ARE YOU READY TO TRAVEL THROUGH TIME?
Enjoy some of the visual highlights from the 2026 HKIS Spring Celebration.
The Time‑Traveling Rickshaw
Beep, hiss, blip, whizz—this futuristic rickshaw is ready to transport you through time. A hybrid of old and new, it recalls an era when rickshaws were a common mode of transport, carrying riders on brisk commutes. Or can it fly through space? Watch and listen for the signal that you are about to teleport.
Rainbow Tunnel
Step through a time tunnel that leads you back to the Rainbow Staircase, an iconic feature added to the Repulse Bay Primary School in 1975. This installation celebrates an architectural element that carried generations of learners upward on their educational journeys.
Neon Street
Neon captures the vibrant pulse of Hong Kong. Bright signs flourished in the 1960s as symbols of a rapidly growing city and economy. Crowded streets and competing messages demand your attention—but the HKIS Mission shines brightest, guiding your way.
Three Pillars
Meet the HKIS founders: Joe, Mel, and Lenard—a businessman, an educator, and a pastor. Together, they represent the school’s foundational pillars: community, education, and spirituality. HKIS today remains an amalgamation of all three. Atop each pillar sits a relic representing the tools that equip you for success on your journey.
Bob’s Desk
Imagine the workload carried by HKIS’s first Head of School, who led Hong Kong’s only American school at the time. Papers to read, letters to type, contracts to sign, calls to make—Bob Christian managed much of this from his office, now the Upper Primary faculty lounge. This installation honors the space where he laid the foundation for HKIS’s Christian values, warm community, and commitment to individualized education. (See it in situ in the Upper Primary office.)
Future Infinity
Step into the future. A mirrored room invites reflection on your journey: How did you get here? Where have you been? What have you learned? As you look back, you can’t help but imagine what lies ahead. This installation also brings to life the collaborative mural created during HKIS’s 50th year by primary students and artist Francesco Lietti.
Thank you to everyone who made the 2026 HKIS Spring Celebration a tremendous success—from those in attendance to those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to craft an evening filled with meaning and joy. Even for those who couldn’t attend, we hope you can feel the sense of commitment, community, and fellowship that makes HKIS timeless.
